Deputy clerk gets Capital One Keller Award
For the third time since 2005, the Bureau of Governmental Research has bestowed an Excellence in Government award upon an employee of the St. Tammany Parish Clerk of Court’s office. The 2009 Capital One Keller Award for Innovation, which recognizes governmental employees who have used creative solutions to solve pressing problems, was presented to Dee Laux, Elections Deputy Clerk for St. Tammany Parish.

Waiters' race to kick off Bastille Day Fete
Ooh-la-la! The French celebration of independence, Bastille Day, will be celebrated Saturday in Covington from 5-10 p.m. on North Columbia Street. The street fete will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a waiter’s race beginning at the Columbia Street Tap Room and ending at the St. Tammany Homestead, one of the sponsors of the festivities.

Sheriff says jail bursting at the seams
St. Tammany Sheriff Jack Strain said Tuesday that because of overcrowding at the jail, his department has run out of money, and has asked Warden Greg Longino to come up with a plan by the end of the week that would shut down certain parts of the jail, and to ship prisoners to other jails.

Registration set for new students in public school
Students who are new to the St. Tammany Parish School System can still register for the 2009-2010 school year at the school they will be attending. Students changing schools within the parish for a reason other than grade promotion, those who have been home schooled and parents or court-appointed guardians who do not have the required proof of residency must complete an assignment/transfer request form at the child welfare and attendance offices to obtain an assignment letter before registering at the school.

Sheriff and Slidell police on the hunt for armed robber
The armed robber, who is suspected of two armed robberies last week on Brownswitch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, is also suspected for the robbery of the Blockbuster Video store at the corner of Gause Boulevard and Military Road Wednesday afternoon.
