Registration set for new students in public school

Students who are new to the St. Tammany Parish School System can still register for the 2009-2010 school year at the school they will be attending. Students changing schools within the parish for a reason other than grade promotion, those who have been home schooled and parents or court-appointed guardians who do not have the required proof of residency must complete an assignment/transfer request form at the child welfare and attendance offices to obtain an assignment letter before registering at the school.

According to the registration criteria, students entering first grade must have attended a full day public or private kindergarten for a full academic year or have passed academic readiness screening at the time of enrollment.

Students born before October 1, 2003 are eligible for first grade while those born before October 1, 2004 are eligible for kindergarten.

The following are required for registration: state certified birth certificate; proof of residency; social security card; health record of required immunizations; report card, records from last school and LEAP results; assignment letter if needed; and custody papers if needed.

Proof of residency includes a current utility bill, the current year W-2 form, income tax return, vehicle insurance agreement, a signed real estate lease agreement or signed mortgage loan documents

This year, the following immunizations are required: four doses of the DPT immunization, the last given after the fourth birthday; three doses of the polio vaccine, the last given after the fourth birthday; MMR — one dose at 12-15 months and the second dose before starting school; Hepatitis B, three doses are required for first time enrollees; HIB, four doses or at least proof of one dose after 15 months of age; Varicella, chickenpox, two doses or a history of the disease; MCV4, meningococcal conjugate, is required for all students entering sixth grade or 11 years old.

Registration will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on July 27 at the following locations: Covington High School, Fifth Ward Junior High, Folsom Junior High, Fontainebleau High School, Honey Island Elementary, Lake Harbor Middle School, Lee Road Junior High School, Little Oak Middle School, Mandeville Middle School and Northshore High School.

On July 29, registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the following locations: Abita Springs Elementary School, Abney Elementary, Alton Elementary, Bayou Lacombe Middle School, Bayou Woods Elementary, Boyet Junior High, Brock Elementary, Carolyn Park Middle School, Clearwood Junior High, Cypress Cove Elementary School, Florida Avenue Elementary, Folsom Elementary, Fontainebleau Junior High, Lyon Elementary, Madisonville Elementary, Magnolia Trace Elementary, mandeville Elementary, Marigny Elementary, Monteleone Junior High, Northshore High School, Pearl River High School, Pine View Middle, Pontchartrain Elementary, Riverside Elementary, St. Tammany Junior High, Salmen High School last names A-L, Slidell High School, Slidell Junior High School, Tchefuncte Middle, Whispering Forest Elementary, William Pitcher Junior High and Woodlake Elementary.

On July 30, from 9 a.m. to noon the following schools will register new students: Abita Springs Middle School, Bonne Ecole Elementary School, Chahta-Ima Elementary, Creekside Junior High, Lakeshore High School, Little Pearl Elementary, Madisonville Junior High, Mandeville Junior High, Salmen High last names M-Z and Sixth Ward Elementary.

Sheriff and Slidell police on the hunt for armed robber

The armed robber, who is suspected of two armed robberies last week on Brownswitch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, is also suspected for the robbery of the Blockbuster Video store at the corner of Gause Boulevard and Military Road Wednesday afternoon.
