American Legion seeding playoffs tomorrow

The American Legion Sixth District East seeding playoffs are on tap tomorrow. In the East Division, Laneco Construction (Pope John Paul II) is hosting Anytime Fitness (Pearl River High), tomorrow night at 6 o’clock in the playoff seeding game.

The New Orleans Saints and United Way for the Greater New Orleans area are holding the Sixth annual Community Patrol Summer Camps at the Saints’ Practice Facility on Airline Drive in Metairie. Five separate two-day camps are scheduled with youngsters ranging in age from 9-13. Approximately 60 youngsters from the Boys and Girls Club of Covington participated in the program June 30 and July 1 being instructed by various Saints players.

One of the highlights of her season this year for her was a game-ending single during the 2009 Eades and Subervielle Memorial Tournament, to help NHS defeat Chalmette 2-1. This year, the Lady Panthers went 19-8 overall and 7-7 in district, but missed out on the postseason.

Louisiana Knights 17/18s fall to Baton Rouge White Sox
The Louisiana Knights 17/18s came up short Tuesday falling to the Baton Rouge White Sox 8-2 in a game played at Doyle High School. The Knights (8-18) were limited to five hits in the loss. Trey Marino, leading the Knights with a .333 average went 2-3 with a double and a triple with a run batted in and scored once. Justin Vaughn (.318) also went 2-3 with a single and a triple producing an RBI. Hunter Ham picked up the Knights’ other hit, while Michael Pustanio drew a walk and scored a run. Marino (0-4) pitched a complete game, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits. He posted six strikeouts, but walked four and hit a batter. The Knights held a 2-0 lead after three innings.

The First annual Mandeville Seafood Festival/ Firecracker Fun Run took place Friday July 3 with nearly 300 runners and walkers participating at Fontainebleau State Park. Runner’s Choice and City Soccer presented the event with all proceeds benefitting KidSense and other local charities in the community.

The 2009 American Legion Southeast and Southwest Regional State Tournaments take place July 11-15 in Ponchatoula and Baton Rouge with four St. Tammany Parish teams participating. The double elimination regional tournaments feature eight teams each.

Sheriff and Slidell police on the hunt for armed robber
The armed robber, who is suspected of two armed robberies last week on Brownswitch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, is also suspected for the robbery of the Blockbuster Video store at the corner of Gause Boulevard and Military Road Wednesday afternoon.
