La. Knights 18s go 5-2 in World Wood Bat 18U

The Louisiana Knights 18s posted a 5-2 record in the World Wood Bat 18U Championship in Marietta, Ga., held June 30-July 5.

The Knights 18s (29-7) won the Bracket S competition surviving the round of 32, making it to the round of 16.

The Knights 18s fell to Chet Lemon’s Juice 6-3 Sunday July 5. The Knights trailed 3-0 when Wes Rea delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. Chad Livingston drove in a run on a fielder’s choice grounder in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. Zac Hawkins was the hard luck loser. He went five and one-third innings, allowing five hits. Rea closed the game in relief.

The Knights 18s lost their opener June 30, coming up short falling to L.E.A.D Ambassadors 3-2. Chase Compton went 2-3 with a run batted in. Rea drive in a run with a double and Brandon Boudreaux scored twice. Garrett Cannizaro and Bryan Picou had doubles for the Knights. Starter Boomer Scarborough went five and third innings and took the loss with Hawkins in relief.

The Knights came back to blank World Yacht Clippers 3-0 with Logan Peterson and David Napoli combining on a three-hitter. Peterson (1-0) tossed five-innings, allowing just two hits. He recorded nine strikeouts, while walking just one.

Napoli gave up one hit in two innings to register a save. Rea went 2-3 and drove in two runs, while Hawkins collected the other RBI with a triple.

The Knights then edged Team Connecticut 4-2 with Mason Katz driving home two runs. Chad Gough-Fortenberry went 2-3 with a run batted in and Hawkins knocked in a run. Starter Jordan Rittiner (2-1) gained the victory, giving up one earned run on just two hits in five innings of work. He struck out nine, but issued five walks and hit a batter. Rea chipped in with two innings of relief, allowing one run on just one hit.

The Knights edged the Houston Banditos Black 4-3 on July 3 with Rea going 2-3 with two runs batted in. Compton collected two hits, while Cannizaro and Gough-Fortenberry drove in a run and scored once each. Nathan Fury (4-0) gained the victory, going four and two-third innings, giving up just one earned run on one hit.

Picou came on in relief and hurled two and a third innings of hitless relief to notch a save, his third of the summer.

The Knights 18s cruised past the Palm Beach Clippers 8-2 on Saturday with Livingston going 3-3 with a run batted in and scored once.

Hawkins drove home two runs, while James Abraham scored twice and knocked in a run. Cannizaro, Compton, Gough-Fortenberry and Rea drove home one run each in the six-run victory. Sean Kennel (4-1) pitched a complete-game, five-hitter.

The Knights trimmed the Excel Blue Wave 6-5 Saturday with Katz going 3-4 with three runs batted in and scored a run. Cannizaro had a hit with an RBI. Scarborough earned the victory and Jason Greenleaf went two and a third innings in relief.
