Half of the undefeated teams in the Southern American Football League will be on display tomorrow night at William Pitcher Junior High as the Southeast Louisiana Steel Sharks host the Louisiana Westbank Warriors at 7.

Both squads enter tomorrow’s action at 3-0 and are coming off of one-sided victories. Southeast Louisiana shutout the Tri-Parish Bayou Crusaders 30-0, while the Warriors defeated the Houston Hustlers 20-3.

This season, the Steel Sharks have outscored their opponents 62-24. The Warriors have scored 48 points, while allowing 23.

Tomorrow night’s match up features two of the four 3-0 teams in the league. The Baton Rouge Riverboat Bandits along with the Lafayette Bayou Bulls are the other 3-0 squads.

Southeast Louisiana defeated Lafayette in the jamboree 22-0.

Steel Sharks’ general manager Lee Hillman said he’s looking forward to the game.

“I’m excited because this year’s team might be the best we’ve had in eight years,” Hillman said. “We have four new coaches and new players. We’re excited to give the guys this opportunity on a Saturday night.”

Hillman said the key to the good start is the dedication, commitment and a bunch of young guys who didn’t get a chance to fulfill their dreams of playing professionally.

The SAFL is a semi-pro football league. The teams play four-15-minute quarters with a 25-second play clock. If the game is tied after regulation, it goes into a sudden death overtime period.

The Steel Sharks are led by quarterbacks Dustin Moreau, a Slidell High graduate, and Brandon Newman. The running backs are Pearl River graduate Steven Sylvas and Chris Abran.

Just before halftime in last week’s victory, Moreau hit wide receiver Johnny Davis in the corner of the end zone for a 35-yard score.

Newman was involved with a pair of touchdowns. He scrambled and then threw a 40-yard pass to LaZedrick Cowart for a score. He also made an option pitch to Abran, who finished off a nine-yard scoring run.

The defense also got into the scoring act when defensive end Austin McGee intercepted a pass and took it all the way for the touchdown.

The Steel Sharks opened the season July 25 with an exciting 26-24 victory over the Jackson, Miss. Juggernauts.

Southeast Louisiana trailed 24-0 in the fourth quarter before scoring 26-unanswered points to capture the victory. They then won by forfeit over Austin in week two and then got to 3-0 with last week’s win.

Tomorrow night kicks off a four game homestand. The next two games are scheduled for the next two Saturdays against Houston and Jackson respectively. The homestand concludes Sept. 19.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $2 for children 5-12 and those under five are free.
