Ann Rheams, deputy director of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, has been named executive director, replacing Carlton Dufrechou who has been named general manager of the Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission, or Causeway Commission.

Rheams has been with the LPBF in various capacities for 17 years. She holds a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of New Orleans with an emphasis on development in the costal zone. Her undergraduate degree in geography included a certification in cartography and she focused on riparian habits and streams.

Dedicated to the mission of the foundation, Rheams says that she will continue to restore, preserve and protect the water quality, habitats and coast of the entire 10,000 square miles encompassing the Lake Pontchartrain Basin.

Before joining the LPBF, she was with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s Water Resources Program.

A new program was unveiled at the board meeting held Thursday. The “Enjoy Our Lake” campaign will encourage public access venues to the restored bodies of water and other natural areas in the basin.

Rheams said, “We have all worked very hard to achieve our success for the basin and now is the time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. We feel that if they use it, they will love it and protect it.”

The foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
