A ST. TAMMANY NEWS EDITORIAL

This week we are running a special edition. readers will find an insert called Shop St. Tammany.

Inside, the reader will find, besices the usual ads, articles about how the parish has been doing during the last year. Unlike a lot of news, this is good news. The articles will illustrate how St. Tammany has prospered in the past four years.

Our economy is booming. The current national recession has had a minor effect here, and the atmosphere and attitude in the parish is one of excitement, optimism and a real can-do mindset.

One of the reasons that things are so good here is that our residents are loyal to local businesses.

We have many unique businesses here, as well as national chains.

But even with the national business, when one buys goods in the parish, the money usually stays here, whether it is in sales taxes or in purchase of other local goods.

More sales tax means better government services, and bigger spending means local businesses are successful and when they are successful, they expand and increase the job market. More jobs means more buying, more sales tax, more benefits. You get the picture.

Buying local means growth for everybody who lives in this parish. So, when reading about how well things are in St. Tammany Parish, we also ask you to pay attention to the ads of our local businesses, and to help out the economy, by keeping your purchases local. It’s just good business.

" Thank you for your shop local piece. But I must say that you have made errors due to a lack of research. Noone is prospering right now. Get out and speak to the locally owned businesses. They are hurting and not being supported like you say they are. Also, when one spends with national chains, only the sales tax stays here. In the Dec. 26-28, 2008 USA Weekend, Stacy Mitchell, author of Big Box Swindle and researcher with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance stated, “Of every $100 spent in a chain store, $14 stays "
