Capt. George Bonnett of the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office said Derrill Naqin, 36, of Amite led both law enforcement departments on a long chase down I-12, but was finally captured and booked with one count of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and one count of flight from an officer. He is being held without bond in the St. Tammany Jail
The incident began Wednesday afternoon at 4:45, when Tangipahoa deputies informed the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office they were chasing a suspect wanted for attempted murder of a Tangipahoa deputy down I-12.

Deputies sighted Naquin’s 1994 Chrysler Concorde from the La. Highway 1077 overpass and put down a spike strip, which blew out one of Naquin’s tires, and slowed him down to about 50 mph.
Other deputies then blocked ramps along I-12 eastbound to prevent motorists from accidentally getting into the chase.
The deputies laid down strips several more times, but Naquin would not stop until all of his tires were deflated near the Louisiana Highway 1088 overpass. Naquin finally pulled off the road and came to a halt at the tree line. The entire chase took about 10 to 15 minutes, Bonnett said.
When deputies got to the car they found Naquin with a knife sticking in his chest. He told deputies that he had stabbed himself during the chase.
Fire District 3 paramedics rushed Naquin to the Louisiana Heart Hospital in Lacombe where he was treated for a wound the proved to be minor. He was released to the Sheriff’s Office who arrested him and he was taken to the St. Tammany Jail.
Bonnett said that Naquin will be released into the custody of the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office where he will be charged with attempted first-degree murder.
