Jackson scored first, going on a 63-yard drive, culminating in a 27-yard touchdown pass to make 6-0 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion.
Southeastern Louisiana responded quickly as quarterback Brandon Newman rolled left and connected with Johnny Thomas for a 73-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 6-6.
The two-pointer was no good, keeping the contest knotted through halftime.
Steel Sharks’ coach Ashton McGee said he felt like the team realized at halftime the team was in for a fight. He credited head coach Ron McCaleb with making good adjustments at the half. McCaleb was named coach of the year.
“I think we are great at a lot of things and making in-game adjustments to take advantage of what opponents are doing,” McGee said. “Coach Ron has the defense prepared for everything no matter who our opponent is for the week it helps me prepare during the week because we love to compete even at practice.”
On Jackson’s second-half opening drive, the Steelsharks’ defense stepped up. Thaddeus Williams scooped up a fumble and ran 40 yards to pay dirt. The two-point conversion was no good, keeping it 12-6.
Later in the game, Southeastern Louisiana essentially put the game away when Kendrick Perry scored from six-yards out. After another no good two-pointer, the Steel Sharks led 18-6.
Jackson advanced the ball to the Steel Sharks’ 18 with the next drive, but Sean Finn tipped a ball that Cory Steptoe intercepted and raced 82-yards for the score. Newman completed a pass to Traye Jones for two, which made it 26-6.
Jackson picked up a late safety to finalize the scoring.
