St. Paul’s captures regional championship

St. Paul’s School’s swim team took the Northlake Regional Championship Meet Thursday at Franco’s Athletic Club.

SPS tallied 521.5 points to win the event over runner-up Northshore (491.5) in the 13-team field.

Fontainebleau (473) finished third, followed by Mandeville (263) and Slidell (113) rounded out the top five.

Pope John Paul II (60) was sixth with Northlake Christian School (53) coming in seventh and Covington (46), eighth. Lakeshore (19) was 11th, while Salmen (18), finished 12th and Pearl River (2) was 13th.

The event featured two double-winners in St. Paul’s Colin Babcock and Fontainebleau’s Thomas Beckstrom.

Babcock captured the 200-yard individual medley in two minutes and the 500-freestyle (4:47).

He also swam on the winning 400-free relay team (3:31). Babcock’s team consisted of Gavin Breaux, Daniel Spell and Christian White.

Beckstrom won the 50-freestyle (23.10 seconds) and the 100-backstroke (56.25). He was also part of the winning 200-medley relay team (1:57) and the 200-free relay squad.

His 200-medley and 200-free relay teammates included, Danny Fox, Rhett Guinot and Derek Weidlein.

Guinot captured the 200-free (1:54).

St. Paul’s Robert Klazynski finished atop the 50-back (30.44) and fourth in the 200-free (2:01), while teammate Patrick DeSilva won the 50-yard breast (32.22).

Northshore’s Michael Faust took the 100-fly (56.43), while Slidell’s Jared Meredith topped the 100-free (51.47) and NCS’ Miles Coate was first in the 50-fly (28.69).

MHS’ Walter Loop won the 100-breaststroke (1:01).

Sheriff and Slidell police on the hunt for armed robber

The armed robber, who is suspected of two armed robberies last week on Brownswitch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, is also suspected for the robbery of the Blockbuster Video store at the corner of Gause Boulevard and Military Road Wednesday afternoon.
