Art on the Move show ongoing in Slidell

Slidell Art League opened its themed art show,  “Art On The Move” Show Oct. 23 at the Slidell Art League Gallery in the Historic Train Depot in conjunction with a reception and presentation of awards for top art work.  The show was sponsored by The Times Bar and Grill, conveniently located downstairs from the Gallery.

The art was presented by Kathleen Scherer and her shows committee and will remain on display in the gallery for open public viewing until Nov. 20. Gallery hours are from a 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.  There is no charge for the public to view the show while visiting the gallery and gift shop.

Other award winners are in the two dimensional category, including oil, watercolor, pastels, acrylic and gouache paintings. Winners were: Don Edwards, for a watercolor painting showing a scene from yesteryear with a sailing packet delivering supplies and goods to a remote location on a bay.

The title is “The Way We Were;” “Christmas Shopping in the Phantom,” a gouache featuring the grill of a Rolls-Royce, by Laura Mauffray Borchert; an animal pastel titled “I Run Fast” by Jean Frondorf won third place and honorable mention was awarded to an oil painting by Richard Ray for “Gazing Toward Jupiter.”

In the Photography category, Camella Dimitri placed first with, “Screeching Halt;” Mary Pat Landry won both second and third places with “Hubba Hubba”, and “She Moves.” Honorable mention was awarded to Sunday Alcorn for “A Rose for You.”

In the three dimensional category, Debbie Robichaux placed first with “Iron Horse Tracks To Nowhere;” Ken Decker was awarded second place for, “The Rocking Unicorn;” newcomer Matt Monahan won third place with a Black Walnut carving titled, “No Limit;” and honorable mention was placed on the horsehair-fired clay pottery piece presented by Kelly Landrum-Hammel, named, “Horseback Rider.”

Many awards carry cash prizes and the competition draws a large group of talented artists both League members and non-members.

The judge for Art On The Move was Jessica Weems, who is currently teaching the Gifted and Talented Art Students at Northshore High School. She is originally from Mandeville and is a graduate from Fontainebleau High School and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from William Carey College in Gulfport, Miss. She has exhibited in many galleries from Baton Rouge to Ocean Springs as well as participating in festivals in that area.    

The next show by Slidell Art League will be Christmas in the Depot Nov. 20-21 and will offer a sneak preview called appropriately, Black Friday Preview, the day following Thanksgiving. The Christmas show formally opens Dec. 4, with an opening reception 6-8 p.m.

Sheriff and Slidell police on the hunt for armed robber

The armed robber, who is suspected of two armed robberies last week on Brownswitch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, is also suspected for the robbery of the Blockbuster Video store at the corner of Gause Boulevard and Military Road Wednesday afternoon.
