UNO's Looper finishes second in tournament

University of New Orleans junior Ken Looper carded a 4-under par 68 to climb into a tie for second place individually as the Privateers golf team shot a 4-over par Tuesday to tie for third place at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate in Springfield.

The event was hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University featuring a 7,104-yard, par 72 course.

Looper, a Fontainebleau High grad, earned his second consecutive runner-up finish with rounds of 72-71-68—211.

UNO head coach Chris McCarter talked about Looper’s performance.

“Ken had a strong finish and brought it back for us a little bit. He did a nice job, and it was good to see Hector (Arias) have a real consistent tournament. We came up a little short this week, but we had a solid fall,” McCarter said.

Privateers’ senior Hector Arias 70-74-72— 216 to tie for eighth individually.

Junior Oscar Zetterwall shot a 3-over par 75 in the final round, and UNO also got a 5-over par 77 from sophomore Sebastian Szirmak, who tied for 17th individually. UNO freshman Pablo Serna (71st) struggled to a final-round 90, while Derek East, competing as an individual only, closed with an 80 to tie for 67th.

UNO 280-300-292—872 finished two behind tournament champion Louisiana-Lafayette, which came in with a final-round 290. Second-round leader Rice was just one shot back, with UNO and Central Arkansas tying for third.

Texas-Arlington’s Zack Fischer captured the individual medalist honors firing a 5-under par 67, finishing at 7-under par overall.

UNO, which wrapped up the fall season, will kick off the spring season Feb. 15-16 at the Rice Intercollegiate.
