Pope John Paul II’s Lady Jaguars captured a 25-13, 25-23, 25-19 bi-district round playoff win Wednesday over the Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies Yellow Jackets at home.

No. 14 Pope John Paul II (12-17, 0-4) moves on to face third-seeded Newman, while 19th seeded Haynes (12-16, 0-8), a first-year school out of Metairie, has its initial year conclude. PJP faces Newman at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The first game was close early, but the Lady Jaguars seized control. Leading 8-6, PJP’s Adriana Cutura stepped to the service line and helped the Lady Jags score 12-consecutive points to go up 20-6.

During the run, Cutura had five aces, including two that hit the top of the net and dropped over.

Taylor Copeland, Jessica Gros and Ashley Lang all posted kills during the spurt. Copeland tallied seven kills for the match, while Gros had nine assists and seven digs and Lang finished with six digs and three blocks. Also for the Lady Jaguars, Paige Bourquard posted 11 kills, 10 assists and five aces. Lang said the run was amazing.

Haynes Academy battled back though and was able to trim the deficit to 24-13 before PJP won 25-13.

The second game was a different story. With Haynes leading 12-11, the Yellow Jackets appeared to grab the momentum for good and it looked like they were going to even the match at one-game apiece.

Haynes Academy ran off 10 of the next 14 points to take what looked to be a commanding 22-15 advantage.

With a steep hill to climb, the Lady Jaguars made it to the top. They caught-and-past Haynes with a 9-0 run and went ahead 24-22.

The Yellow Jackets scored once more to make it 24-23, but PJP got the game-winning point to take the 25-23 victory.

PJP coach Earl Gervais said after playing Haynes in the final regular-season match, they knew what the Yellow Jackets would give them. He said Haynes is one of the scrappiest teams they’ve played all year.

“We knew they weren’t going to go away,” Gervais said. “I wanted to get out to an early lead and we did it the first game. I was half-expecting the same thing in the second and the third game. We fell in that lull and it was like ‘wake up,’ and then we did kind of wake up a little bit. We got back and we got the second one. Once we had that second one, I knew we could eventually finish it off and take care of the third one. They weren’t going to go away, so we had to take it away.”

PJP did take care of the third game, but it was another tough one.

The Lady Jags led 13-12, but PJP made a great-stretch run, scoring seven of the next eight and had a 20-13 cushion.

Haynes Academy came back and cut it to three at 22-19, but the Lady Jaguars ended it with the final three points for the 25-19 win.

For the Yellow Jackets, Katie Philippi registered eight digs, seven kills to go with a block and an ace. Keion Brown tallied eight digs, while Kelsey Brown dished out 11 assists and Chloe D’Aquin added five aces.
