In praise of female athletes By St. Tammany NewsAround this time of the year most everybody around here is football crazy. It’s time for the divisional playoffs in high school football; college teams are coming to the end of their season, and are hoping for bowl bids, or even a trip to the BCS. And of course there is our beloved Saints on an amazing trip. With a 9-0 season so far, there is talk of, dare we say it, Super Bowl aspirations? But putting that all aside, we would like to commend a St. Tammany high school team that just won their third straight state championship in volleyball. The Lady Wolverines of Northlake Christian School trounced their opponents, Louis McGehee to take the Division IV state championship. This is really a great achievement. Volleyball is a tough sport. No, there is no tackling, hitting or blocking, but there is great athleticism, skill and strategy involved. To win the state championship three years in a row is a feat that should be as recognized as any of our high school football teams winning a state championship. By the way, not to dis the male teams, but this weekend, we do have Salmen playing Breaux Bridge and St. Paul’s playing Thibodeaux in the next round of high school football playoffs. Back to the Lady Wolverines, these female students worked hard all year long to get to the championship tournament. They had to defeat several other very good volleyball teams to reach the final match. On top of all that, the Lady Wolverines did it with a new coach. Very well done ladies. Let’s hear it for the Lady Wolverines. |
