According to Trooper Nick Manale, Troop L spokesman for the Louisiana State Police, Gregory Willett, 60, of Bush was killed when his 2005 Honda VTX motorcycle struck the left rear of a Ford pickup truck driven by Ray S. Harris, 58, also of Bush.
Manale said that around 8:40 p.m. Harris was backing his truck out of a private highway on La. 40 near milepost 44, directly in the path of Willett who was going east on the road.

However, Harris, who was wearing his seatbelt and uninjured in the accident, submitted to a chemical breath test, and he registered a 0.077 percent blood alcohol reading.
Under Louisiana law, a person is considered drunk if they have a blood alcohol reading of 0.08 percent. However, Manale said police also believe that Harris was using drugs at the time, and under state law, if a person is using drugs and alcohol at the same time while driving a vehicle, they are charged with DWI. Harris gave a urine sample for testing to determine if he was also on drugs at the time of the accident.
“He was much more impaired than what was registered as 0.077,” Manale said.
Harris was arrested for his third DWI, vehicular homicide and failure to yield from a private drive. He was then booked into the St. Tammany Jail.
“I guess he didn’t get the message the first two times he was charged with DWI,” Manale said. “Now he might be facing some real jail time.”
