The Volleyball Institute of America is holding their annual tryouts for the upcoming 2009-2010 Club Volleyball Season. The 15-18s are Tuesday at Franco’s Athletic Club from 6-9 p.m. and Wednesday at NCS from 6-9 p.m. Both tryout dates are mandatory. The Covington Recreation Department is taking Youth Basketball registration for boys and girls ages 5-16 at the CRD office, located at 317 North Jefferson St. Suite C from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The deadline for those 7-10 is Nov. 23 and the deadline is also Nov. 23. The final day for 5-6-year olds is Jan. 8, 2010 and 11-16s have until Jan. 20, 2010. Three Rivers one mile and 5K races
The Covington Three Rivers Art Festival is now accepting entries for its annual One Mile and 5K races tomorrow. The One Mile race begins at 8 a.m., with the 5K kicking off at 8:30 a.m. Both races start at the Columbia Street Landing in downtown Covington. Registration applications are available at www.threeriversartfestival.com and www.15th streetflyers.org. Entrants can also sign-up in person on race day beginning at 7 a.m. Post-race refreshments, including food and beverages, will be available to all registered participants. Awards will be presented in a number of age categories for both males and females. Entry fees also vary by age, with a family discount available for those with multiple entrants from the same household.
Thanksgiving Basketball Camp
Mandeville’s John Priola and Fontainebleau’s Barry Dotson are conducting the Legends Thanksgiving Basketball Camp Nov. 23-25 at Pelican Park’s Brown Gym for children ages kindergarten-eighth grade. There are three time slots, including half-days from 9 a.m. to noon or 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. There is also full day 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost of the half-day session is $75 without lunch and $90 with lunch. The fee for the full day session is $95 without lunch and $110 with lunch. Each camper receives a free T-shirt and they participate in daily competitions, games, contests, giveaways and prizes. Indoor soccer camp

One mile and 5K races
Slidell High School’s Cross Country Team is sponsoring a 1-mile/5K run Dec. 5. The event begins at 10 a.m. on the school’s track. Registration runs from 9-9:45 on race day. Early registration, which runs until Nov. 23, are encouraged through the school and cost $15. The fee includes a T-shirt. Registration at the race is $5 and doesn’t include the shirt. All money raised goes to the Cross Country Team.

Northshore Tennis Association offers youth program
The Northshore Tennis Association has an ongoing Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls ages 4-18. It starts with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures. The year-round programs are held at the Kehoe-France Northshore School and public courts in Covington and Mandeville. Competitions are held for boys and girls 10 and under that have not been ranked on a state level and are new to tournament competition. Yearly registration is $25 and $5 and an unopened can of tennis balls is required per tournament or $8 total per tournament.
