Northshore High boys take third in state meet

Northshore’s boys’ swim team took home third place in the Division I state-swim meet Friday and Saturday at the Sulphur Park and Recreation Aquatic Center.

Northshore coach Ed Kelly said he is proud of the third-place finish. “We had a limited number (9) and finished just 28 points out of second place,” Kelly said.

Jesuit captured the event with 364.50 points, while Catholic High (238) was second. Fontainebleau (175) was fourth and Pineville (161.50) rounded out the top five of 27.

St. Paul’s finished seventh (148), while Mandeville (95) was ninth. Slidell (28) and Denham Springs tied for 17th.

St. Paul’s Colin Babcock captured two events including the 100-breast stroke (57.80 seconds) and the 200-individual medley (1:52).

The other local winner was Northshore’s Andre Smedstad in the 100-backstroke (51.50).

Jesuit swept the relays. The Blue Jays won the 200-medley relay (1:38), 200 free relay (1:29) and the 400-free relay (3:14).

Jesuit’s Brian Carr topped two events, in the 200-freestyle (1:42) and the 500-free (4:38).

Teammate Ramsey Burch was also a double-winner. He was tops in the 50-free (21.20) and 100-free (47.42).

Also, West Monroe’s Matthew Wilson captured the 100-butterfly (52.07).
