The Mandeville Lady Skippers captured the tournament championship of the Central Lafourche Bayou Winter Classic on Sunday. The Lady Skippers finished the tournament with a 5-0 record winning three bracket games on a wet and sloppy field on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals.

Mandeville opened the tournament topping Hahnville 2-0 behind goals from Kaitlin Davis and Whitney Murchison. MHS then blanked E. D. White 4-0 on goals from Delaney Sheehan, Julia Hunter, Murchison and Whitney Hollowell. Mandeville capped off Saturday’s play with a lopsided 11-0 victory over Thibodaux. Hunter and Sheehan tallied two goals each in the match. Missy McGuire, Hollowell, Ashley Gussoni, Rachel Robinson, Ann Coogan, Carly Allison and Davis had one goal each in the lady Skippers’ dominant victory.

In Sunday’s semifinals, Mandeville downed the Chapelle Chipmunks 5-1 behind Hunter’s hat trick and a goal each from Sheehan and Robinson.

Mandeville squared off with two-time defending Division II state champion Vandebilt in the championship match and captured a 3-1 victory. The teams battled through a scoreless first half. Mandeville got on the board with goals from Hunter, Davis and Sheehan in the second half to take the tournament title.  MHS goalkeeper Jennifer Boudreaux earned the victory and was named the top defender for the tournament.

Mandeville head coach Sean Esker said his club turned in a solid team effort throughout the tournament.

“Playing five matches in two days, you count on everyone on the roster contributing and that is what happened for us,” Esker said.

“Being able to play that well early in the season and to beat a two-time state champion is an accomplishment the girls can be proud of. I think we did a good job in all aspects of the game, especially adjusting to the wet field conditions,” Esker added.

“By Sunday afternoon the field was a muddy mess with the middle part of the field being almost unplayable. Each play was a real challenge under those conditions,” Esker said.

Following its tournament championship, MHS remained undefeated winning its seventh consecutive game Monday on the road blanking the Zachary Lady Broncos 3-0 behind Sheehan’s hat trick, giving her 10 goals on the season. Sheehan netted two first half goals to give the Lady Skippers a two-goal margin before closing out her hat trick in the second half.

MHS’ defense played a solid match only allowing one shot on goal. KK Peters was named the Lady Skippers’ top defender.

Mandeville has incorporated strong all-around play only allowing two goals on the season getting off to its 7-0 start. MHS has dominated its opponents outscoring them 31-2.
