PJP boys finish eighth at state swim meet By Chris KinkaidSt. Tammany News Pope John Paul II’s boys’ swim team took eighth place in the Division 4 swim meet held last Wednesday and Thursday at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center. The Jags tallied 109 points in the 20-team field, while Northlake Christian School (47) was 11th. St. Charles Catholic won the event with 397 points, followed by LSU Laboratory School (291), Episcopal (235), Newman (228) and The Dunham School (228). PJP’s top participant was Scott Whitehead, who took second in the 100-yard butterfly at 57.29 seconds and fourth place for the 500-freestyle at 5:31. Newman’s Christian Reiss (52.19) captured the 100-fly and LSU Lab School’s Clay Furr (4:59) won the 500-free. Reiss also captured the 200-individual medley (1:55). PJP’s 200-yard medley relay squad consisting of Whitehead, Mitchell Bogran, Connor Sterbenz and Will Berkowitz was sixth (2:08). LSU Lab School (1:44) was first. PJP’s 200-free relay (1:55) team came in eighth of 14. The group included Berkowitz, Sterbenz, Ryan Lohrenz and Robby Turner. St. Charles Catholic (1:35) topped the race. Bogran came in 15th for the 100-backstroke (1:16), while Newman’s Patrick Reiss (55.76) took the top spot. Bogran was also 12th for the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15) as LSU Lab School’s Alex Welsch (1:03) was first. In the 400-free relay, PJP (4:16) and NCS (4:16) tallied eight and ninth-place finishes respectively. Newman (3:32) won the event. Episcopal’s Austin Butler was a double-winner in the 50-free (21.29) and the 100-free (46.63). Newman’s Clay Furr topped the 200-free (1:50). In the girls, LSU Lab School took the team title with 327 points. Episcopal (249) was second, followed by St. Charles Catholic (230), Louise McGehee (187) and St. Martin’s (176) rounded out the top five or 22 teams. Northlake Christian School (47) was 12th, while Pope John Paul II (18) finished 20th. The Lady Wolverines’ top swimmer was Rachel Strain, who was sixth in two events, the 200-individual medley (2:31) and 500-freestyle (6:08). LSU Lab School’s Smacker Miles won the 200-IM (2:07), while Metairie Park Country Day’s Breanna Weber captured the 500-free (5:33). Miles and Weber were double-winners. Miles also topped the 200-free (1:54) and Weber also had a first in the 100-fly (1:01). NCS’ 200-medley relay team (2:23) was 13th, while PJP’s (2:33) came in 16th. LSU Lab School (1:54) got the victory. NCS’ squad had Strain, Sarah Burt, Taylor Mendoza and Alexis Rey. The Lady Jaguars group consisted of Rachael Noto, Corin Canepa, Jennifer West and Jordan Dier. In the 200-free relay, NCS (2:13) and PJP (2:26) were 13th and 14th respectively, while St. Martin’s (1:48) took the top spot. The Lady Wolverines squad included Mendoza, Rey, Morgan Mele and Lori Perdomo. Pope John Paul II’s had Canepa, Emily Favre, Samantha Tatum and Olivia Colton. NCS (4:50) and PJP (5:20) took consecutive spots in the 400-free relay with the Lady Wolverines getting 11th and the Lady Jags posted a 12th-place finish. LSU Laboratory School (3:44) was first. Northlake Christian’s group had Rey, Burt, Perdomo and Strain. PJP’s consisted of Dier, Noto, Favre and West. The rst of the winners were LSU Lab School’s Laura Furr, who won the 100-free (54.81) and the 100 back (59.59). Louise McGehee’s Amanda Gilbert captured the 50-free (25.13) and Newman’s Angela Angela Cherbonnier won the 100-breast (1:11). Switching to Division 4, which took place Friady and Saturday, Lutcher won with 364.50 points. Vandebilt Catholic (354.50) was second, followed by Alexandria Senior High (222), Caddo Magnet (192) and St. Michael School (137) rounded out the top five of 15. Salmen (52) finished 12th. Salmen’s Gabe Padua (25.20) was 13th in the 50-yard freestyle. Caddo Magnet’s Matt Kundo (22.66) won the event. Salmen’s 200-medley relay team (2:05) and its 200-free relay squad (1:51) were seventh. Vandebilt (1:45) captured the 200-medley relay, while Lutcher (1:34) won the 200-free relay. Both of Salmen’s teams included Padua, Matt Sorense, Taylor Everard and John Prudhomme. East Jefferson’s Dylon Rykosky took the 200-free in 1:47 and the 500 free in 4:55. Vandebilt’s Kip Pierce captured the 100-fly (53.24) and the 100-breatstroke (1:02). Also for Vandebilt, Elie McRae (2:08) won the 200-individual medley, while Brennan Paige (57.50) was first in the 100-back. Lutcher’s Hunter Louque (49.42) topped the 100-free. In the girls, Vandebilt Catholic won the team portion with 366 points. St. Louis (308) was runner-up, followed by Cabrini (272), Lutcher (240) and Alexandria Senior High (187) rounded out the top five of 18. Salmen (40) and Pearl River (31) finished 11th and 12th respectively. Pearl River’s Briana Harwell was the top-local swimmer, coming in seventh for the 200-individual medley (2:36) and 10th in the 100-freestyle (1:02). Caddo Magnet’s Sarah Davis (2:22) captured the 200-IM, while Cabrini’s Emily Bozant took the 100-free. (1:02) Bozant also topped the 50-free (25.51) and Davies topped the 500 free (5:27). Salmen’s (2:31) 200-fee relay squad was eighth and PRHS’ (2:50) was 11th. Vandebilt (1:58) won the event. Salmen’s team included, Maria Leonard, Kristi Grommon, Danielle Campo and Kee Lee Andrews. Pearl River’s group had Harwell, Kelsey Fickle, Kaitlin Babington and Lindsey Boudreaux. In the 200-free relay, Salmen (2:20) took ninth with Lutcher (1:47) winning it. The team included Campo, Andrews, Leonard and Kristi Grommon. The rest of the winners were Ursuline Academy’s Katie Stahel (2:05) in the 200-free. Vandebilt’s Brittany Daigle (1:06) won the 100 fly, while teammate Rhyan Thomassie (1:12) captured the 100-breaststroke. St. Louis’ Anne Claire Babineaux (1:04) won the 100-back and Cabrini topped the 400-free relay (3:58).
