Most 10-year-olds are worried about getting Play Stations or Nintendo DS’ for Christmas. But not Taylor Morgan. All of her energies are focused on helping others this holiday season.

A big fan of the Babysitters Club book series, the Lake Harbor Middle School fifth grader wanted to start a club of her own.

She got together with a few of her friends, Becky DeGeneres and Gracie Schneider, sought out input form her mother and decided the best kind of club they could start would be a charity club.

The girls dubbed themselves the Happy Holiday Helpers and began work on an event to raise funds for less fortunate families.

Morgan, who will turn 11 on Thursday, said since her birthday is in December, Christmas has always been her favorite holiday so she wanted to do something to coincide with that holiday.

The club has grown to six members, and they meet every other week at Café Du Monde in Mandeville, where they drink hot chocolate, eat beignets and plan the ‘Tis the Season Extravaganza.

The event will be held at Fontainebleau State Park on Dec. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Morgan said she had tried to hold the event last year, but could not get everything in order in time so this will be the first year for the extravaganza. However, she hopes it will become an annual event.

The event will benefit four local families. Morgan’s mom, Pepper Morgan, picked the families from a list provided by their church, First Baptist Church of Covington; and one family she got from the Big Brother/Big Sister organization.

In total, the families have 11 children, and Morgan plans to provide presents for all of the children as well as a Christmas meal for each family.

The club is also collecting non-perishable food items, which will be divided up and given to the families.

Admission to the event will cost $2, with $1 of that going to pay for the park admission fee. The additional $1 will be waived for anyone bringing in two non-perishable food items. Children 2 and younger will be admitted for free.

The event will include pictures with Santa Claus, food and craft booths, raffles and an inflatable jump and face painting for the children. The Audubon Zoo BugMobile and Boudreaux, the Zephyr’s mascot, will also be in attendance.

There is no charge for vendors to participate, but each vendor must donate one item to be raffled off.

Anyone bringing an unwrapped toy for one of the children will be entered into the raffles for free.

Pepper Morgan said she is very proud of her daughter for coming up with this idea and has supported her and helped her as she and her friends have worked to plan this event.

She said Taylor first came up with idea after the family helped their elderly next-door neighbors last year by buying them Christmas dinner.

“Taylor felt really good about helping them out and wanted to help others,” she said. “It’s never really been about her.”

She said at first she thought the idea was just a phase her daughter was going through, “but it’s been a year and she really, really wants to do this.”

Their goal is to have 500 people show up and to raise $1,000.

Anyone interested in helping or who wants to set up a booth can e-mail the club at happyholidayhelpers@hotmail.com or call Pepper Morgan at 818-613-3475.
