Northshore’s Panthers won the 2010 South Regional Powerlifting Champ-ionship Saturday at Pope John Paul II High School.

Last year, Northshore had its string of five-consecutive regional titles snapped. Coach Christian Munson said it was great to get it back.

“These kids just work so hard,” Munson said. “They get in the weight room everyday. They’re the ones that are pushing weight. I don’t have much to do with it. I’m just proud of them, but to bring this trophy back to Northshore is a big deal.”

Teams were awarded seven points for first place finishes, five for second, three for third, two for fourth and one for fifth.

Northshore posted 42 points, followed by St. Paul’s School (28), Ponchatoula (27), Pope John Paul II (26) and Northlake Christian School along with Destrehan rounded out the top five with 12 points in the 21-team field.

Locally, Salmen (11) was seventh, Covington (7) took ninth, Archbishop Hannan (6), was 10th, Slidell (11) was 11th, Pearl River (3) was 13th and Mandeville (2) tied St. Thomas Aquinas and Amite for 14th.

Fontainebleau participated, but did not score.

Covington senior Cody Kellum was named the Outstanding Lifter for the light platform, which covers the 114-165-pound weight classes. Kellum, who lifts in the 132-pound class, recorded a 425 in the squat, 280 bench and 425 dead lift for 1,130. Kellum said it was his first time winning the award.

“I’ve been working pretty hard, so it was nice to win it,” Kellum said.

“It was kind of one of my goals toward the end of the meet,” Kellum said. “I wasn’t even aware I was close to that until we got to the deadlift.”

Northlake Christian junior Tyler Clark captured the Outstanding Lifter in the heavy platform, which is 181 and above. Clark, who competes in the 181-pound class, had a 530 squat, 335 bench and 500 deadlift for a 1,365 total.

Clark said he was surprised when he found out he had won it. He thought the light platform was 181 and down.

“I knew Cody Kellum had a better Wilkes total than me,” Clark said. “But then when they called out that it was 165 and down for the (light), I was like wow, cool, OK. So I was surprised to get it.”

The Wilkes total is a way to figure out the best lifter with a pound-for-pound strength total based on body weight and the total number of pounds lifted.

Kellum’s Wilkes total was 972.6, while Clark’s was 938.9.

Northshore had four lifters win their weight class, including Matt Oaks of the 114s, Matt Miller (165), James Johnson (198) and Ray Brandhurst (220).

Oaks finished with a 730 total, while Miller had 1,120, Johnson, 1,255 and Brandhurst was at 1,425.

St. Paul’s had two top finishes in Kurt Bradbury (123) and Mickey Johnson (super heavyweight, which is 220 and one quarter pounds and above). Bradbury was at 905, while Johnson tallied a total of 1,545.

Pope John Paul II’s Ryan Cosse tied St. Paul’s Korey Miller in the 148s each with 1,095 pounds.

The non-local winners were Ponchatoula’s Kaleb Muse (242) and Jonathan Kinchen (275). Muse recorded a 1,195 total, while Kinchen was at 1,535.

In the 114s, Northshore’s Quinn Harris was second with a 705 total, followed by Pope John Paul II’s Matt Deveer (600).

In the 123s, Northlake Christian’s Landon Lyons (785) took third.

Salmen’s Evin Claude (915) finished runner-up for the 132-pound weight class, ahead of PJP’s Dakota Davis (910).

Pope John Paul II’s Kevin Oakes (1,015) was third in the 148s.

In the 165s, Slidell’s Justin Agar (1,105) took second and SPS’ Wesley Galloway finished third (1,045).

St. Paul’s Alfred Johnson (1,260) recorded a runner-up spot in the 181s and Northshore’s Eugene Young (1,180) was third.

In the 198s, PJP’s Matt Bolgiano (1,175) finished third.

For the 275s, Northshore’s Terangi Phifer (1,490) was runner-up.

St. Paul’s Mickey Johnson (1,545) captured the super heavy weight, which is 275-above.
