First Baptist Christian School’s Eagles lost to the Grand Isle Trojans 67-42 in a district game held Tuesday at FBCS.

The district leader Grand Isle (19-13, 5-0) used their height and speed in the victory.

They jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but First Baptist (12-6, 2-2) came back and trimmed it to 9-6 when Anthony Benasco hit a pair of free throws and Trey Gardner came up with a steal and passed to Caleb Earhart for a layup. Earhart topped FBCS with 20 points with four 3-pointers, while Gardner posted five. But Grand Isle scored the next 15 points.

Galen Santiny, who finished with 19 points, knocked down a 3-pointer and then Seth Terrebonne drained a shot to make it 14-6. Wade Scioneaux, who led all scorers at 24-points, tallied a layup.

Santiny split free throws with 1:10 left, upping the lead to 17-6. Then Terrebonne got a steal and took it in for a dunk. Scioneaux’s layup capped the run and made it 21-6, forcing FBCS to call timeout.

The teams exchanged buckets before the quarter closed and the Trojans led 23-8 after one.

“The first three minutes, we played great, slow, controlled and keeping an eye on things,” First Baptist coach Scott Reine said. “One or two breakdowns and all of sudden, they took away with it and then we were just trying to play catch up from there.”

Grand Isle began the second period by splitting free throws and then Scioneaux nailed a trey to make it 27-8 at the 7:06 mark.

Earhart responded with one of his own with 6:14 remaining and it was 27-11.

Grand Isle added to its lead, going on an 11-0 run and having a commanding 38-11 advantage with 1:23 remaining.

First Baptist never quit as Donovan Fredericks hit a shot and got fouled. His wasn’t able to complete the three-point play, but had trimmed it to 38-13.

The Trojans hit from behind the arc with 10-seconds to go and were up 41-13 by halftime.

First Baptist struggled in the third quarter, getting its only points from an Earhart 3-pointer and they trailed 53-16 after three periods.

The Eagles battled hard in the fourth stanza. FBCS began with a 10-0 run. Gardner hit from behind the arc. Fredericks sunk two free throws. Earhart, who had 12 in the period and was playing with four fouls, capped it with the final five points on a 3-pointer and two from the charity stripe, cutting the score to 53-26 with 4:52 remaining.

Grand Isle pushed the margin back up to 30 at 57-27 when Earhart scored six straight in 15 seconds. He hit a 3-pointer and then was fouled attempting a trey. Earhart was successful on his attempts. It was 57-33 at the 3:20 mark, but FBCS was unable to get any closer in the loss.

Reine said Grand Isle is a big aggressive team, but he was happy with his team’s effort throughout.

“We had a lull, but we kept playing,” Reine said. “We kept playing hard and tightened it up at the end a little bit, so I’m proud of them.”
