Pope John Paul II’s Jaguars were dealt a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Runnels in the bi-district round of the playoffs on the road Saturday.

The 23rd seeded Jaguars finish the season at 8-12-2. Runnels goal came with five minutes left in the game on a ball that hit the crossbar and dribbled in.

PJP’s Teddy Macke scored an apparent goal on a free kick in the 60th minute, but the official ruled the whistle had not been blown to start play.

Despite the loss, Jaguars coach Jack Mills said he was proud of his squad.

“Our kids played their hearts out and gave everything they had,” Mills said. “I hurt for those kids because they gave 100 percent. We played probably two-thirds of the game on their side of the field. We had more shots than they did, but we couldn’t put it in the goal.”

This season’s Pope John Paul II team featured 11 seniors including, Tyler Bolner, Travis Brink, Ryan Cadard, Sidney Corwin, Wes Edwards, Zach Goodnow, Drew Harding, Brandon Jeanmarie, Tyler Lusignan, Kevin Oakes and Josh Williams.

Mills talked about his seniors.

“Ten of them started at various times this year. Three of them are playing soccer for the first time in high school in Tyler Bolner, Wes Edwards and Brandon Jeanmarie. They all contributed big time.”
