AAU Basketball Tryouts

Team Shockaz will be holding their annual try-outs for perspective players in various age groups Feb. 20 at the Hammond High School Gym. The boys’ age groups are 11U (fifth grade), 13U (seventh), 14U (eighth) and 15U (ninth). Teams will compete in weekend AAU League Play games, regional events and state tournaments. Many will compete on the National level. Times for the fifth and seventh graders are from 3-5 p.m. The eighth and ninth graders run from 4-6 p.m. It is important that you bring a copy of your birth certificate or proof of age with you, along with your gym gear. There is also boys’ 17U along with a girls’ 15U (ninth) team that will begin after their school season has ended. Anybody interested can call Team Shockaz at 634-1569, e-mail team_shockaz@hotmail.com. Pelican Park youth registration

Pelican Park is holding signups for youth baseball and softball through March 2. Baseball is for those ages 5-17. Participants must be 5 by April 30, 2010. The softball ages are 5-15 and you must be five by Dec. 31, 2009. Returning players may register online at www.pelicanpark.com. New participants can sign up in the Castine Center, which is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will also be open Feb. 20 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, or if you would like to volunteer to coach, call 626-7997.

Above the Rim AAU tournaments

Above the Rim in Madisonville is hosting several Amateur Athletic Union tournaments between March and June for age groups 8U-14U. The cost is $200 per team for each event. The ATR March Madness Tourney is scheduled from March 5-7 with the deadline Feb. 26. The next one is the St. Patty’s Day Tourney March 19-21. The entry deadline is March 12. The Spring Tourney is set for April 23-25 with April 16 the deadline. The ATR Fleur de Lis Tourney takes place April 30-May 2 and the deadline is April 23. The ATR Cajun Classic Tourney is May 14-16 and participants must be signed up by May 7. The final competition is the ATR Summer Tourney June 4-6 with a May 28 deadline. Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show

The 31st annual Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show and Festival is scheduled for March 12-14 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. The event will be open 2 until 9 p.m. March 12, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 13 and 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. March 14. The show features an outdoor food festival, fishing and hunting seminars, vacation planning with outdoor guides and outfitters, family entertainment area with Midway Thrill Rides, live skeet shooting demonstrations, monster truck rides and more. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Military in uniform get in free. 2010 Good Shepherd School Golf Tournament

The Eighth Annual Good Shepherd School Golf Tournament in Honor of Father Harry Tompson, S.J., occurs March 15 at Stonebridge Golf Club of New Orleans in Gretna. Pearl River High golf tournament

Pearl River High School’s football team is holding a golf tournament March 20 at Pinewood Country Club. Registration begins at noon and the four-man scramble gets underway with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. A $65 donation is required per golfer and includes the green fee with a cart, beverages throughout the tournament, Closes to the Hole Contest and Longest Drive Contest. The event will feature door prizes and dinner is being served afterwards. Trophies will be awarded for first-and-second place low net and first place low gross. Salmen cheerleading tryouts

HOOP 4 Life Shootout

The third annual Hope Overcomes Our Problems 4 Life Shootout takes place March 27-28 at the Payne Center on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi for travel basketball teams with girls ages 11-16. The entry fee is $225 after Feb. 1, but there are discounts for early registration and multiple teams. The sign up deadline is March 20. The tournament features teams from Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. Awards will be given to first and second place teams along with all-tournament. Scouting services will be there to observe and there will be a motivation speaker to talk to all participants. In conjunction with the tournament, there is also a basketball camp going on for first-six grade boys and girls at a $15 fee. Henry J. Calamari Memorial two-mile Race

The Henry J. Calamari Memorial two-mile Race takes place April 17 starting in the Our Lady of Lourdes parking lot in Slidell at 8 a.m. The cost if $10 if you pay by March 1, $12 from March 2 to 8 and $15 after. Those who sign up before March 8 receive a T-shirt, but after that can’t be guaranteed one. The check-in time and race-day registration goes from 7-7:45 a.m. the day of the race. Awards will be given for first overall male and female runner, first and second in each group, third place for ages 13-under, first OLL boy and girl and the youngest unassisted runner. Keller Williams Realty Tee off For Scholarships

Keller Williams Realty Professionals in Slidell is holding their first Tee Off For Scholarships Charity Golf Tournament April 23 at Oak Harbor Golf Club in Slidell. The four-man scramble beings with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch will be provided before the event with dinner following. There will also be a parade of prizes and an ongoing raffle. There is also to be a contest within the tournament with the proceeds being donated to the Breast Cancer Fund. Flyers and sponsorship forms are available and can be e-mailed. Cheer Competition team tryouts

Galloway’s Studio of dance in Slidell is currently taking applications for the 2010-2011 Wildcat varsity cheer competition team for ages 4-14. The cheer clinic is April 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. Tryouts are scheduled for May 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. Contact cheer director Stephanie, at 718-9061 to obtain paperwork and for more details.

Northshore Tennis Association offers youth program

The Northshore Tennis Association has an ongoing Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls ages 4-18. It starts with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures. The year-round programs are held at the Kehoe-France Northshore School and public courts in Covington and Mandeville. Competitions are held for boys and girls 10 and under that have not been ranked on a state level and are new to tournament competition. Yearly registration is $25 and $5 and an unopened can of tennis balls is required per tournament or $8 total per tournament.
