UNO finishes 12th in Rice Intercollegiate

Privateers’ Looper fires final round 73

The University of New Orleans golf team carded a final-round 309 on Tuesday to finish in 12th place at the Rice Intercollegiate held at the Westwood Golf Club in Houston. UNO finished with rounds of 314, 312, 309—935.

Junior Ken Looper, a Fontainebleau High grad, fired a 1-over par 73, which was the Privateers’ best score of the week. Looper finished tied for 22nd individually (80, 78, 73—231).

UNO sophomore Sebastian Szirmak was the low Privateer overall, claiming a tie for 20th following a final-round 77 (79, 74, 77— 230). Junior Oscar Zetterwall T-45th shot a 79 (77, 80, 79— 236), while freshman Pablo Serna T-67th came in with a final round 80 (78, 87, 80—245) and senior Hector Arias T-74th (84, 80, 85249).

Rice the tournament host fired a 4-over par 292 team score to grab the championship (286) by 19 strokes over second place Auburn. The Owls were the only school in the 15-team field to break 300 in all three rounds (297, 297, 292—886).

Pacific University took third (310, 302, 297— 909). The only other Louisiana school, which competed was Louisiana Tech, taking eighth place (315, 316, 297— 928).

Rice’s Christopher Brown took individual medalist honors after a final-round 69. He finished at even-par overall.

The Privateers will continue the spring season next week, hosting the Allstate Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at TPC Louisiana.
