Interim Mayor Edward “Bubby” Lyons, members of the Mandeville City Council and the city administration will gather Friday afternoon, March 19, along side members of the Kierr Family as the officially dedicate the Kierr Family Gardens.

The St. Tammany News incorrectly reported that this event was to take place last Friday, March 12. We regret any confusion this may have caused.

The property, located at 601 Carroll St. in Old Mandeville, was donated first to the Trailhead Foundation in February 2003. At that time a stipulation was placed on the property requiring it be used for an open park setting and requiring it be made available for the use and enjoyment of the people of Mandeville.

The Trailhead Foundation then donated the property to the City, who is pursuing a landscape design to plant a new camellia garden, which would be a tribute to the Kierr Family. Possible future plans includes moving the historic Lang/Jourdan House from Laksehore Drive to the property.

After the Hurricane Katrina, the property was damaged and the beautiful camellias, which thrived on the lot were severely damaged.

The family’s former weekend home, a tree house structure, was also heavily damaged. After the city determined that it was too damaged to save, the structure was demolished and hauled off.

The general public is invited to attend the dedication on site and the mayor is calling upon all citizens to join in gratitude and appreciation to the members of the Kierr Family for their donation.
