Summer program needs volunteers

Slidell Memorial Hospital is currently accepting applications for its Summer Junior Volunteer Program.  

Applicants must be 15 years old by June 1, 2010. Junior volunteers will perform a variety of duties throughout the hospital and will be asked to volunteer a minimum of one four-hour shift each week. The number of Junior Volunteers selected for this program is limited.

Application packets are available at each school, in the SMH Volunteer Office or online at www.SlidellMemorial.org/news.Completed application packets must be received by April 23.

P.E.O. offers

scholarship

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter AY, is accepting applications from high school senior girls for a $750 cash scholarship to use towards college expenses. Applications are available from the counselors at the Slidell and Pearl River area high schools, and must be postmarked by March 29, 2010.  

The P.E.O. Sisterhood is an international philanthropic organization, which provides educational opportunities for women.  More than a quarter of a million women work in 5700 chapters to support six P.E.O. educational projects. In addition to these projects, the members of Chapter AY in Slidell also raise funds each year to provide a cash scholarship to a deserving student graduating from one of Slidell and Pearl River’s six area high schools.

Project Graduate meetings set

Project Graduation is an annual community-sponsored, parent coordinated, alcohol and drug-free event that allows the senior classes of Salmen, Pope John Paul II, Slidell, Pearl River, and Northshore High Schools to enjoy an all-night celebration on the night of their respective graduations in May. The advance price is $30, which includes a T-shirt, a souvenir DVD of the event, all-night food and drink, entertainment, gifts, and door prizes.

The March meeting for Project Graduation has been cancelled. The next meeting will be held April 12 at 7 p.m. in the PJP cafeteria. Parent volunteers and corporate sponsors are needed to help with this worthwhile event.  

The last meeting will be May 3.

ACT math prep

course upcoming

An ACT math prep workshop will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. March 29-31 and from 3:30-6 p.m. April 1 at Pope John Paul II High School in Slidell.

The workshop focuses on a three-part strategy for improving a student’s Math ACT score. Intensive content refresher, test taking strategies, and practice tests are taken nightly. The students will also receive seven practice tests with answers and item analyses.

The cost is $150 per student and covers all materials, workbook, teacher notes, strategies and practice tests.

The instructor is Christine Neely, math department chair at PJP II.

SMH auxiliary

scholarships

Slidell Memorial Hospital has released details of its 2010 scholarship program.  

Scholarships in the amount of $500 will be awarded to four area students who plan to enter the healthcare field.

Application packets have been distributed to all local high school guidance counselors. They can also be downloaded from Slidell Memorial Hospital’s web site at www.SlidellMe morial.org.

Applicants must have appropriate grades, leadership qualities, community involvement and financial need.

The annual scholarship program is a longtime project of the SMH Auxiliary Volunteers, whose volunteers help run the hospital’s Gift Shop, Reception Desk and other support services. Members raise funds for the scholarship fund from book, jewelry and bake sales throughout the year.

Completed scholarship applications must be received by SMH no later than April 2.

Tutoring and

smoothies

Tropical Smoothie Café will offer tutoring to students in third through eighth grades.

Sessions are $18 per hour, and will include homework help, practice work, tutoring in math, reading and English, as well as LEAP practice. Instruction will be given by Samantha Junius-Arcemont, formerly of the Jefferson Parish Public School System, where she taught for 15 years.

Tutoring for third and fourth grades will be held on Mondays, fifth and sixth grades on Thursdays and seventh and eighth grades on Fridays. All sessions will be held from 4-8 p.m. in the café conference room, with Saturdays and Sundays available by appointment.

Extra one-on-one tutoring is also available for an additional charge. All registered participants will receive discounts at the cafe.
