Mandeville’s Jenna Baker turned in a strong performance before the home crowd winning three events during Saturday’s 26th annual Skipper Relays. Baker, who was voted the Girls Field MVP, captured the discus (103-09), javelin (125-08) and shot put (33-00). Mandeville’s Ashley Irwin won the 1,600 meters (5:53.46). MHS’ Nichole Freeman finished second in the javelin (113-04) behind Baker and came in third in the discus (83-10).
MHS’ Amanda Pace earned a second place finish in the high jump (4-06), while Sharon Ourso took second in the pole vault (9-00).

Baker talked about being pleased with her effort.
“I was very happy with my overall performance. I wanted to go out there and will all three of my events and I did,” Baker said.
“It was a beautiful day and I just want to continue working hard to get better,” Baker added.
Mandeville girls’ track coach Tiffini King highlighted Baker’s outstanding effort.
“Jenna turned in a fantastic performance. I’m looking forward to seeing her continue to excel as the season progresses. She always gives it 110 percent when she is competing,” King said.
SSA’s relay teams turned in tremendous performances with their ‘A’ team winning the 4x400 meter relay (4:20.93), 4x800 meter relay (10:26.45) and the distance medley (13:29.63). The Doves’ also earned a second place finish in the 1,600 spring medley (4:41.27).

In the boys’ competition, the St. Augustine Purple Knights (154) downed the host Mandeville Skippers (129.50) for the second year in a row, while Newman (82) took third followed by the St. Paul’s Wolves (55.50). Locally, Archbishop Hannan (24) came in seventh, while Northlake Christian School (13) finished ninth.
Mandeville freshman Vincent Lombardo was named the field MVP after winning the discus (128-00), establishing a personal best, and taking second in the shot put (44-00) also a PR, breaking his previous best by five feet.
Lombardo talked about his performance.
“I thought it was pretty awesome to win the award as a freshman. I actually thought I could have done a litter better in the shot put. I was hoping to throw about 46 feet, which is what the St. Aug competitor (Walter Bates) threw (45-09),” Lombardo said.
“I was excited about the discus since I was able to establish a PR there as well. I am glad I was able to help out my team getting 18 points for the discus and shot put,” Lombardo added.
Lombardo also ran a leg as a member on the Skippers’ ‘B’ team spring medley relay, which earned points.
Mandeville boys’ track coach Gerald Singer praised the effort of Lombardo.
“I think Vincent is going to be the next young rising star on our boys’ team. He has put together good distances and has the potential to continue to improve,” Singer said.
MHS’ Bryan Mutell (4:46.78) edged out teammate Steven Hollander (5:01.03) to give the Skippers a one-two finish in the 1,600 meters.
The Skippers’ relay teams excelled at the meet winning the 4x800 (8:50.20) with Marty Van Duym, Henry Gerbracht, Jordan Penton and Hollander. The Skippers also captured the 1,600-spring medley (3:53.52) with the team of Jabbarrey Stuart, Xavier Marcus, Charles Jones and Van Duym. Additionally, the Skippers won the distance medley (11:40.79) with the combination of Hollander, Kenneth Thomas, Van Duym and Mutell.
Mandeville’s Matt Duris came in third in the pole vault (11-01) and was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (47.19).
