Former St. Tammany Parish players spark UNO victory over Southern

Privateers’ reliever Cromartie earns victory

The University of New Orleans baseball team rebounded from a five-game losing streak Wednesday taking a 13-7 road victory over Southern.

UNO’s Nolan Church went 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Ryan Eden delivered three hits in six plate appearances driving in two runs and scored once to help spark the Privateers (4-10) to victory. It was UNO’s first road win in four games.

Eden, a Salmen High grad, is batting .347 with one homer and six runs batted in, while scored 13 runs. Eden playing center field also had four put outs.

JUSTIN CROMARTIE

UNO senior Nick Schwaner, a Slidell High graduate, and Kyle Maldonado produced two hits each with two RBIs apiece in the Privateers’ season-high 19-hit attack. Schwaner is hitting .320 and tops the Privateers with 12 runs batted in. He also leads the club with 18 runs scored. He has a .540 slugging percentage with one homer and eight doubles. Schwaner, who played second base, had three put outs and two assists.

Privateer’s junior Jay Morris, a Mandeville High grad, went 0-2, but walked three times and scored twice to help spearhead the victory. Morris is batting .291 with 10 runs batted in.

UNO sophomore Justin Cromartie (1-1) earned the victory, hurling two scoreless innings of relief.

He was one of five pitchers used by the Privateers. Cromartie, a Northlake Christian School graduate, made his fifth appearance, including one start. He faced eight batters allowing one hit and walked one batter.

He has thrown eight innings allowing eight hits, while posting four strikeouts with nine walks.

The Privateers jumped out to a 6-0 advantage with three runs in the second and third innings. After Southern cut the lead in half with three runs in the fifth, UNO regained the six-run advantage plating three more in the sixth. UNO pushed across another run in the seventh and three in the eighth to break it open.

Demario Ellis paced Southern (4-8) with three hits, including a three-run homer.
