meeting in Slidell
The City of Slidell will hold its annual Hurricane Preparedness meeting for residents at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Salmen High cafeteria on Spartan Drive. Mayor Ben Morris and Police Chief Freddy Drennan will be joined by representatives of the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office, the Louisiana State Police, St. Tammany Office of Emergency Preparedness, National Weather Service, Fire District One, Cleco and Acadian Ambulance to outline the city and parish plans in the event of a hurricane. The public will be able to ask questions about getting ready for a hurricane.

The Louisiana Sea Grant Program in cooperation with the LSU AG Center will hold a town hall meeting on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Slidell High School Cafeteria on Tiger Drive. The forum is to provide all stakeholders and citizens with answers on the oil spill.
The forum will include representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, Department of Health and Hospitals, NOAA, and British Petroleum, who will answer questions. The meeting is divided into two parts, First there will be a 45-minute session where officials will update citizens on the oil spill. Then citizens will be able to go around to tables where government experts will answer questions about the spill. District 9 to hold meeting Tuesday
St. Tammany Parish District 9 Councilman Gene Bellisario said the next community meeting for his district will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cafeteria of Boyet Junior High School, on Rebel Drive, off Pearl Street.

There will be an update on the status of the revised plans relating to the appeal for the Miramon Apartment Complex on S. Military Road and any other information relating to the project, the start-up of various capital projects that will impact District 9 within the next 60 days, potential changes to flood insurance premiums after the FEMA maps are approved, drainage issues in the District 9 area, several zoning issues that can impact District 9 and other local and parishwide projects.
District 11
to hold meeting
The monthly meeting for Parish Council District 11 constituents will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the library of the Bayou Woods Elementary School located off Carroll Road in Slidell. The following items will be reviewed and discussed.
• The status of the proposed road from Airport Road to Highway 11.
• The status of the Bayou Liberty Bridge construction.
• The proposed dedication opening for the Camp Salmen.
• An ordinance to provide definition and requirements for convenience store locations.
• An ordinance regulation size location and other requirements for decorative and agriculture ponds.
• An ordinance regulating dirt and gravel pit excavations.
• Proposed changes to the Minor Subdivision Ordinance.
• An ordinance regulating location and placement of utilities in Parish right of ways.
• Any other items of interest to District 11 constituents.

Fit as a Firefighter taking applicants
For the fourth year, Fire District One and Slidell Memorial Hospital will offer the free Fit as a Firefighter Summer Camp, that builds self-esteem and teaches nutrition and exercise skills to children who struggle with their weight.
The camp is open to children between 7 and 12 years old, and will be held June 14- 18 at the FD1 Training Academy at Camp Villere. Besides learning how to be fit and eat right, the campers will also be part of the Saints Junior Training Camp. There will also be tours of fire station, fire trucks, ambulances, a Blackhawk helicopter, karate and cooking classes and safety instruction in first aid, boating and CPR.
Registration packets for the camp are available at the Cross Gates Family Fitness Youth Activity Center, 200 N. Military Road in Slidell, or the information desk at the Slidell Memorial Hospital, the SMH Parenting Center, or online at www.SlidellMemorial.org.

Inspire accepting applications
High school students in communities surrounding NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center are invited to participate in NASA’s Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research Experience Online Learning Community. Selectees will participate in an online learning community in which students and parents have the opportunity to interact with their peers and NASA engineers and scientists, including some from Stennis Space Center. The online community also provides appropriate grade level educational activities, discussion boards and chat rooms for participants and their families to gain exposure to the many career opportunities at NASA.
Applications are being accepted through June 30. NASA will make selections for the program in September.
