The camp ran from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first four days and then it was 8:30-1 on Friday. The clinic focused on basketball fundamentals like ball-handling, passing, shooting, dribbling, footwork, defense and rebounding.
The children went to several stations to improve their skills before using them in games and contests like hot shot.
On Wednesday, they created a new station for Duhon to speak with a group of children and answer questions.
“I just kind of talked to them about my journey, what it takes to get to the next level and also answer any questions they may have,” Duhon said. “Obviously, these kids have curious minds and I just try to answer them as best as possible.”
One of the campers Anthony Bonnecarrere, 13, an eighth grader at Boyet Junior High, has attended the camp every year. He talked about what he enjoys most about the clinic. He said he enjoys that a lot of his friends attend, they play games and don’t do drills all day.
Bonnecarrere said he looks up to Duhon.
“He started just like us, going to camps and playing basketball,” he said.
Bonnecarrere said the camp taught him a lot.
“I learned new drills, new ball handling skills and new ways to shoot,” Bonnecarrere said.
Charlette Bradley, who will be a freshman at Slidell High in the fall, said she’s been playing basketball all of her life. This is her second year at the camp.
“I’m having a real good time because I’m learning all of these new things,” Bradley said.
Bradley said she’s learned new dribbling techniques and new ways to shoot.
She said she views Duhon as a role model because he started at a young age, tried his hardest to the end and has made it this far.
Duhon said he has a lot of fun at the clinic.
“A lot of guys that coach the camp are guys I played with or friends of mine. It gives me a chance to hang out with them. Also it gives me a chance to teach these kids and watch them grow up and develop.”
The camp coaches are current Salmen coach Jay Carlin, his sons Jesse and Josh along with Salmen assistant coach Ryan Walsh. The other Salmen graduates included, Jared Harrison, Jeffery Lewis, Jeremy Mills, R.J. Scott and Isiah Tate. Also coaching, Slidell graduate John Pichon along with Duhon’s brother Thomas Conley. Also, Brandon Guillory and Julie Brown are coaching.
His camp concluded a week of activities in the area. On July 16, Duhon’s foundation had the Dynamic Duo of Comedy with Williamson and Debra Terry at the House of Blues in New Orleans.
Then Saturday was second annual Chris Duhon Charity Golf Tournament at Oak Harbor Golf Club. Later that day, the five receipients of the Chris Duhon Stand Tall Foundation’s scholarships were honored with a dinner at Bayou Oak Plantation in Slidell.
This week, Duhon, a 2004 Duke University graduate heading to Durham N.C. for his sixth annual camp.
