Fire District 12 personnel extricated an adult woman and a child from an overturned vehicle on Louisiana Highway 25 north of Covington Friday morning.

Shortly before 8 a.m., 911 operators received a call from passing motorist of an overturned green Jeep Cherokee in the woods off La. 25 near the Ramsey Grill.  Responding units discovered the vehicle overturned, with the 55-year-old Donna Reppel of Mandeville and a 3-year-old child trapped inside.  Another child, 2, had crawled from the wreckage.

Louisiana State Police and Acadian Ambulance personnel also responded to the scene, along with two Fire District 12 engines and a rescue unit.

Fire personnel were on-scene at 8:03 a.m., and removed the child within six minutes.

Additional extrication equipment was needed to remove the adult, who was fully freed from the wreckage at 8:32 a.m.  All three patients were transported by Acadian to St. Tammany Parish Hospital with minor injuries.

The vehicle was removed by a wrecker shortly after 9 a.m.

“Situations like this remind us of the importance of being always prepared for whatever needs our citizens have,” said Fire District 12 Chief Darrell Guilott. “Having extrication equipment and highly trained personnel available 24/7 ensures we can live up to our motto, ‘We’re Here for Life.’”

" Great work by the first responders and great job by the citizen who phoned it in. All it takes is that first effort to make a difference. I urge drivers to keep a life hammer device in their vehicle near the driver seat to cut seat belts and break out glass after an accident. "

" Thanks to all of these responders for the rescue today and the one in the future. We are fortunate to have these people on the job. "
