Slidell opens this year by taking on Holy Cross in a battle of Tigers tonight at L.V. McGinty Stadium.

Slidell comes into tonight’s game following a 7-7 tie against Northshore in the Salmen Jamboree. Last year, SHS missed the playoffs after a 5-5 campaign, which featured some close losses.

Holy Cross, a Class 3A school, enters action after falling to Mandeville 23-0 in the Covington Jamboree. Last season, they began 0-2, but won their final eight-regular-season games and then beat Iowa 49-17 in the playoffs before Rayville ended their season 27-20 in the second round.

Last year’s match up went to Slidell 19-7.

Holy Cross coach Barry Wilson said SHS is a good football team.

“It’s going to be a struggle and we’ll have to see if we can right the ship,” Wilson said.

Slidell runs a spread offense. Coach Artie Liuzza said unit did pretty well considering the conditions, but also said they could’ve done better.

The quarterback is junior Bradley Myers.

They’ve got a tough group of running backs in seniors Jonathan Miles, Stephon Smith and Antonio Marshall can play either the running back or wide receiver spot.

Tabor Gamblin hit the extra point, which at the time, gave SHS a 7-0 edge.

Last week, Miles, who ran for 700 yards in 2009, found the end zone on a five-yard run.

Defensively, Slidell is a multiple club.

Last week, the unit played tough, limiting Northshore to just seven points.

They were also put in a tough spot. With the game tied 7-7, the offense fumbled the ball away on their own 25.

Northshore drove the ball to the 10 before the defense made a good stand, forcing a 35-yard field goal. A low snap prevented the attempt and the game eventually ended tied.

For Holy Cross, like Slidell, they run a spread offense.

Coach Liuzza said Holy Cross is real good.

“They have a bunch of seniors that have played for three years,” Liuzza said. “All of these kids have played against us. They can strike from anywhere on the field.”

Senior quarterback Ryan Deemes begins his second year as a starter.

His targets are third-year starters Darryl Watson and Taylor Eymard.

Holy Cross coach Barry Wilson said they feel good about the receiving-corps.

“They’ve been in our program. We like their attitude and if execute, we can get the ball to them and have some success,” Wilson said.

The running back is junior Kevin Joseph.

Holy Cross’ offense struggled last week as they tallied just 146 yards.

Defensively, they are a 4-3 unit that features just three seniors in middle linebacker Brent Bowman, end Stephen Kleamenakis and free safety Ryan Wolfe.

They’ve got a young group that also includes sophomore tackles Jordan Showalter and Vernon Mangum.

Wilson said he feels the defense will be good, but it takes time to gel when you’re young.

The coach also said his club didn’t play bad defensively, but they didn’t execute offensively.

“We left them out there to long,” Wilson said.
