If you are looking for a nice getaway just outside of St. Tammany Parish, the just-opened Bogue Chitto State Park in Washington Parish right outside of Franklinton is the place to go.

The park was officially opened last weekend, and its 1,765-acre expanse offers beautiful woods, rolling hills, streams and rivers. There are 81 campsites available. Most of them are on the water and offer electrical hookups and water for campers who don’t want to really rough it. There are also sites available for RV camping.

For those of you who want a really comfortable stay, with all the amenities of life, there are four cabins with electricity, running water and fireplaces. They all have screened-in porches that look out over a 90-foot bluff. For larger groups there is a dorm, plus a conference center for meetings that includes an amphitheater. For day visitors, there is a visitors center and picnic pavilions.

For those into outdoor sports, there are 14 miles of horse trails, and 7 miles of walking trails to explore the great outdoors. There is also a canoe launch on the Bogue Chitto River, for those into water sports. Fishermen will also enjoy several ponds that are filled with bass.

The park is located on La. Highway 25, about 14 miles south of Franklinton.
