Vaughn Maurice, director of the St. Tammany Humane Society, recently spoke to the members of the Covington Rotary Club.

Maurice told members about the on-going need for animal control and the planned $1.5 million future facility expansion.

In February, the shelter began a transportation project aimed at shipping adoptable dogs to Scranton, Pa., where adoptable pets are in demand.

Recognition of the need to adopt a pet from the surrounding area is up 24 percent over the past year. Animals entering the shelter are given all current vaccinations, are spayed or neutered, microchipped and tested/treated for heartworms. Adoption fees range from $50 to $150.

The St. Tammany Humane Society was founded 60 years ago by Holly Fredricks Reynolds. It now houses 163 animals.
