The Pearl River Roller Derby Swamp Dolls coasted to a 201-44 victory in their final home bout of the 2010 season over the Cenla Derby Dames from Alexandria Saturday night at the Northshore Harbor Center.

Roller derby features a pair of 30-minute halves, which have a series of two-minute bouts. Each bout begins with a whistle where the blockers begin skating. Then a second whistle is blown and jammers take off. The first jammer through the pack is awarded lead jammer status, which is important because that is the only person who can call off the jam.

One point is awarded for every opposing blocker a jammer passes. There are also various penalties that can be called. One jammer laps another, it’s called a grand slam and they get five points. If the lead-jammer goes to the penalty box, she cannot call off the jam.

Also, the participants go by derby names.

In Saturday night’s bout, called “Tar Wars,” $1 of every ticket sold went to help Gulf Coast Oil clean up.

The Swamp Dolls (5-2) got out to an early 8-0 lead through two bouts. They retained the eight-point edge after the third.

Later on, up 30-7, the jammer was sent to the penalty box, giving the Swamp Dolls a great chance to widen the lead and they took advantage, tallying 15 points to go up 45-7.

It got bigger by halftime as Pearl River led 89-20.

The second half started much like the first half did as Pearl River scored four points in the initial jam and had a 93-20 cushion.

After that, they continued to put up points on their way to the 201-44 victory.

Swamp Dolls’ jammer rest N peaces, a Slidell resident, said the key to the victory was teamwork.

Pearl River captain Brass Kicker said both teams played hard and credited the Derby Dames for continuing to compete despite injuries.

“Our girls came out and they played really hard,” Kicker said. “They (Derby Dames) had four girls go down with injury. To keep playing, keep smiling and coming back our here says a lot about their team.”

She also said that some of the fans are understanding their sport.

“This is the third time we’ve played at home this year, so some of the fans are learning the game, so they’re able to see what’s going on a little bit more than they have in the past. We’re having return fans and we appreciate every-one of them,” Kicker said.

The Swamp Dolls’ final bout is Oct. 16 at the UNO Performing Arts Center against the Crescent Wrenches with a 7 p.m. start time.
